There are several worms which attempt to exploit vulnerable SSH servers, by logging in to a host with a collection of usernames and passwords such as “admin/admin”, “test/test”, “root/root”, etc. These shouldn’t be of much concern if you’re keeping good passwords, but there are simple ways to prevent them regardless.

Small companies and homes are setup to use a dedicated Linux machine to act as a gateway, their bridge to the internet outside. Having a computer do the routing allows a lot more flexability than using a dedicated hardware router - for example the ability to join the network to another companies, or allow remote workers via a VPN solution.

NIS is a system which is designed to allow people to use the same username and password on a group of machines. (In NIS terms this group of machines is called a domain). This small introduction will guide you through setting up a central NIS server to centralise your logins, and a client to use it.

This HOW-TO makes some bold assumptions. First it assumes that you are a somewhat competent system administrator. If you’re not, you still stand a decent chance of making it through but no guarantees. Second, it assumes you run BSDI 4.1 and are patched up. PAY ATTENTION to versions of software as listed below. Many of the software packages evolve and you’ll need to tweak the configure scripts to make them match the way I’ve got them set here. Read the changelog files on newer packages and see what’s changed before whining because something doesn’t work.
